Inspirational Foodie Tour of Birmingham, led by Slow Food Birmingham

12 noon - 4pm | Departs Eastside Rooms at 12.00 noon

Join us on a walking tour (no bus!) to discover the vibrant food scene of Birmingham, a city renowned for its diverse culinary heritage.

Slow Food Birmingham is hosting a food tour of Birmingham where Chair Jayne Bradley will lead us in a story of Birmingham’s food culture. A characteristic of Birmingham is its multi-cultural food offer, a city of a 1000 cuisines. This tour will take you through the history of Birmingham’s best ethnic cuisine which, as in most cities, begins in the east of the city, Digbeth in this case.
We will take a brisk walk from Eastside Rooms to The Old Crown in Digbeth, the oldest pub in Birmingham, built in 1368. It happens to be next door to The Custard Factory, where they made one of the world’s first mass produced processed foods. (Alfred Bird invented the powder custard because his wife was allergic to eggs). The Old Crown is the at the heart of the Irish quarter in Digbeth. The east end of Birmingham was the first stop for most first arrival communities, it is still home to the Irish Quarter and hosts the biggest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the UK, which will take place this Sunday the 16th March. We will walk into the city centre from there to the Indoor Food Market, which has been the site of food market since Birmingham received its charter in 1166. We will stop for an Oyster at Pearce’s Seafood Bar and take in the sights and smells of the Indoor meat and fish Market. From there we will try Dim Sum in China Town at Chung Ying before heading to the Taj Mahal Restaurant for a famous Birmingham Balti. Invented in the 1970’s, it put Birmingham’s ethnic food offer on the culinary map and coined the phrase the Balti Triangle referring to a suburb of Birmingham packed with Indian Restaurants, (which is too far for us to get to today).

Butchery Deep Dive at Essington Farm

8.30am - 5pm (including lunch) | Coach departs Eastside Rooms at 8.30am

An in depth, all day visit to the award winning butchery and deli at Essington Farm. The day includes a welcome and introduction to Essington Farm, its history and why the butchery is such an integral part of the business. This will be followed by a guided tour of:

1. The farm shop, butchery and deli,
2. The “butchers barn” where all the meat cutting, maturing and curing takes place
3. A farm tour to see how we rear our free range pigs and cattle and how our production methods are crucial to the success of our butchery department.

Following this, Colin Faraday from Dalziel will be demonstrating new added value products and Duncan Syme will be talking about butchery sales data, trends and data analysis. The day will include a meat-based buffet lunch and will conclude with an informal chat / social.

8am - 5.30pm (including lunch) | Coach departs Eastside Rooms at 8am

Embark on a bus tour to visit two exceptional farm shops, Battlefield 1403 and Canalside Farm. Discover the unique offerings and innovative approaches of these successful businesses.

At Battlefield 1403, immerse yourself in the historic setting as you browse their curated selection of local products and enjoy a delicious meal. This tour provides an opportunity to gain valuable insights into the operations of different farm shops and network with fellow industry professionals.

At Canalside Farm, explore their extensive range of farm-fresh produce, artisan goods, and delightful café. Learn about their commitment to sustainable farming practices and community engagement.
