The primary aim of Farmers’ Markets is to support local farmers and producers, who can then sell the produce they have grown or made to their local community.
Farmers Markets across the UK provide thousands of farmers with a viable local route to market their produce.
The Farm Retail Association’s ‘Real Farmers’ Market’ certification scheme was devised to give the public a clear understanding of which markets are true Farmers’ Markets. We welcome all markets who adhere to our principles to be part of our scheme and promote themselves as a ‘Real Farmers’ Market’, with clear ethical and moral principles.
Customers should be able to buy directly from the farmers, growers and producers who grow and produce the products on sale.
Real Farmers’ Markets are designed to support local economies and communities. They should recruit stall holders from as close to the market as possible. The majority of stalls should come from within the county in which the market is located. Where markets are close to county boundaries or require specific producers, additional traders should be sourced from neighbouring counties. Stalls from further afi eld can be included but the market should be able to demonstrate why it is integral to the market that that stall/product is required.
Each stall holder should have played a significant role in the production of the product they are selling. Each product should either have been grown or produced, baked or made by the stallholder at your market.
Ingredients sourced by a stallholder in the production of their goods should be sourced as locally as possible to the market.
Stallholders who purchase products from another business for resale would not fit within the principal of a Real Farmers’ Market.
Stallholders should be able to talk to customers about how the product has been produced from field to fork. Consumers should receive accurate advice and clear information on how the product has been created. Farmers’ Market Organisers should be familiar with their stallholders and the heritage of the products they sell.
All traders and markets must have suitable Public, Product, and Employment insurance in place to protect their customers. Each stallholder should also hold relevant insurance, which should be monitored by the market organiser.
All traders and markets must follow all relevant national and local laws. The market organiser must have systems in place to ensure that the producers at their market are adhering to these laws. As a minimum, the organiser must ensure each trader is registered with Trading Standards and Environmental Health. It is important that market organisers encourage best practice in all areas of hygiene, health, and safety.
The market should clearly communicate to its customers about the farmers, suppliers, and products that make it a ‘Real Farmers’ Market’. You should be proud to uphold these principles and are encouraged to promote them enthusiastically. Marketing efforts should clearly demonstrate your commitment to being a ‘Real Farmers’ Market’ and how your stallholders embody this standard.
The market organiser and/or organisation should have robust systems and processes in place to ensure that the above principles are consistently enforced.
