Seasonarians was established in 2020 by its three founders, Gareth Jones, Izzabella Fisk and Surrey Hartshorn,as a way of promoting eating seasonally, locally and sustainably. Established in West Wales as A community Interest Company it now has members throughout The Southern Half of The UK.
“Whilst anyone who wants to eat a plant based diet has an identity as a vegan or vegetarian” explains Gareth who works in the dairy industry, ”There didn’t seem to be a structure or an identity for anyone who wants to eat meat and dairy but also wants to do their bit for the environment. So why not become a Seasonarian and source as much of your diet both seasonally and locally?”
In order to help consumers identify where their food is coming from The Seasoanarians have devised a traffic light system which tells you at a glance where it has originated from. This falls in to four bands with green plus for local, green is The UK, while amber is Europe and Red is the rest of the world. They have also developed a calculator which gives you a Seasonarian Score for each month of the year which you can access from their website. Local and home grown food scores 0 whilst food produced outside of The EU scores 4 and so the lower your score the better!
“Our philosophy is that it is better to consume dairy and meat that is produced locally then to fly fruit and vegeatables half way around the world”, continues Gareth. “Our labelling is now going in to fruit and vegetable shops, butchers, farm shops, restaurants and on to milk vending machines”
Their website can be found at Seasonarians.co.uk lists and promotes all of their partnerships which can be found throughout The UK. It also has contributions from Gareth Wyn Jones, TV personality and Terry Walton, gardening expert who both endorse the benefits of being Seasonarians.
“The uptake has been brilliant,” Says Gareth.”Our membership is growing every week as more and more people identify with being a Seasonarian.”
