About Us

The Heron Farm Shop & Kitchen has something to suit everyone – whether you are looking for a quick bite of delicious food, a leisurely lunch, or browsing for a great selection of fresh local and Scottish produce. Run from our farm on the outskirts of Strathaven in South Lanarkshire, we are a family run business with husband and wife team, Emma and Angus, and our two children Katie and Rory. A couple of years ago we made the decision to diversify and open a farm shop offering a selection of home grown and local / regional produce.

Our Concept

Our driving concept is ‘field to fork’ – food provenance, seasonality and freshness. We were amazed to discover the wealth of produce ready to be sourced from the local area; as well as Lanarkshire producers, the farm is close to the border with Ayrshire and its array of locally produced foods. We plan to source from the local area, across Scotland and further afield in the UK for the best quality produce available. We aim to champion local producers offering the freshest, tastiest food and to offer rewarding jobs for local people.

The farm shop is housed in a beautifully relaxing oak-framed building and offers a range of fresh, chilled and frozen produce, allowing a full basket shop – so you really can eat local. From home-reared and local meats, charcuterie, cheese and dairy to jams, chutneys, sauces, confectionery, cakes, bread goods, gifts and lots more…..the offering is varied and includes something for everyone.

The café Kitchen serves breakfast, lunch, light snacks, afternoon tea, tea & coffees and cakes (Emma’s favourite thing!). There is a core seasonal menu and home-cooked specials. Reflecting our ethos of using fresh goods in-season, the Kitchen makes use of produce from the shop, giving customers the opportunity to try before they buy. Enjoy the views across the fields from the café area, or from the covered outdoor seating area. Dogs are very welcome in the designated area of the cafe. Outside we are planning a natural, outdoor play area, which has had valuable input from our own two children!

Why ‘The Heron’?

The farm shop is named after the grey heron which lives by the Calder Water, the river which borders the farm on two sides. If we’re lucky we see the heron at the river’s edge, patiently perusing the local food available to him! He is usually very shy but last year at lambing time, when we were trying to decide what to call the farm shop, we saw the heron every day either in flight or at the river…..and so The Heron Farm Shop & Kitchen was born!
